Turn Off the Lights is a popular browser extension that works on all major web browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Yandex, Maxthon, Brave, Vivaldi, Cốc Cốc, Samsung Internet, Naver Whale, and Microsoft Edge.

Using Turn Off the Lights to dims the web page and reduces the eye strain caused by the bright screen. And it will highlight the video player on that web page such as on YouTube.

Features

  • Alt + (arrow down) to decrease the opacity
  • Alt + * to toggle the lights on all open tabs
• Option for Mouse Wheel Volume Control for each HTML5 video player
• Option to add a filter to the current HTML5 video player (grayscale, sepia, invert, contrast, saturate, hue rotation, and brightness)
• Option to show the Audio Visualization effect on top of the current HTML5 video (Blocks, Frequency, and Music Tunnel)
• Option to loop the current HTML5 video player
• Option to place the Night Mode switch to toggle YouTube in black or white theme. And with a whitelist/blacklist filter
  • Time stamp: Activate the Night Mode within the chosen time

Installation

Create package

1. Install the dependencies:

   npm install

2. Build the extension for the browser you want to test:

   npm run chrome     # creates dist/chrome
   npm run firefox    # creates dist/firefox
   npm run opera      # creates dist/opera
   npm run edge       # creates dist/edge
   npm run whale      # creates dist/whale
   npm run yandex     # creates dist/yandex
   npm run samsung    # creates dist/samsung (submit this to the Galaxy Store)

   Or build and package all supported browsers at once:

   npm run browserzip

   For Safari, use:

   npm run safari     # builds the Safari extension resources for Xcode

Load the unpacked extension

Google Chrome / Microsoft Edge / Opera / Brave / Vivaldi / Yandex / Naver Whale

1. Open your browser's extensions page:
   • Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi: chrome://extensions
   • Edge: edge://extensions
   • Opera: opera://extensions
   • Yandex: browser://extensions
   • Whale: whale://extensions
2. If you already have Turn Off the Lights installed, disable it
3. Check Developer mode at the top of the Extensions page
4. Click Load unpacked (or Load unpacked extension...)
5. Choose the generated dist/<browser> folder (for example dist/chrome for Google Chrome)

Firefox

1. Open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox
2. Click Load Temporary Add-on…
3. Select the manifest.json file inside dist/firefox

Safari

1. Run npm run safari to build the extension resources
2. Open the xcode/Turn-Off-the-Lights-Safari-extension project in Xcode
3. Build and run the extension target following Apple's Safari extension development instructions
